June 28, 2009 - Wright Peak

On the anniversary of our initial hike, Jack and Rich took our first hike of the year with a High Peaks' rookie - little brother Sean. We started out early from ADK Loj and headed out down the trail toward Wright Peak. Our mission was to get to the summit of a mountain we missed last year because of bad weather, and to find the wreckage of the plane that crashed there in the 60s. The trail was a little wet because of some recent rains, but there was not too much mud. Sean did great for his first hike, even though he had to avoid attack from several giant warblers and a pack of South American flying tree slugs.

We made it to the summit in a little over three hours, and enjoyed a great view (aided by a light breeze to keep the black flies away). We searched around the peak to find the plane wreckage, and eventually succeeded with the help of another hiker who was on a similar mission. On the return trip, Jack and Sean enjoyed dipping their feet in the pool at the base of the waterfall; our favorite part of the trail.

The total trip was about 7.6 miles, and we finished in just under 7.0 hours. Seven (7) High Peaks down; 39 to go (although Sean has a little more work to do).
